A. Discuss.

• Do you enjoy playing computer or video games? Why? / Why not?

Yes, I enjoy playing video games because they help me relax after a long day at school and allow me to connect with my friends online.

• What are your favourite kinds of games?

My favourite kinds of games are cooperative adventure games and sports simulators because they are exciting and require good teamwork.

• Which games can’t you stand? Why?

I cannot stand slow turn-based strategy games because they take too much time to complete and feel quite boring.

B. Read the information about three teenagers, and the descriptions of computer games (a-e). Match each teenager with the computer game you think would interest him/her the most. There are two extra games which you do not need to use.

A. Talk in groups. Discuss the questions using the phrases in the box.

• What kind of hobbies are you keen on? Why?

I’m really keen on playing the guitar and sketching. In my free time, I practice new songs because I relax by playing music after a long day at school. I also enjoy drawing landscapes because I enjoy the way it helps me express my creativity and develop my imagination.

• What/Who encouraged you to start your favourite hobby?

My older cousin persuaded me to take up playing the guitar about two years ago. I saw an advert for music lessons at our local youth centre, so I decided to sign up, and I have been doing it ever since.

B. Go to the Pair work activities section. In groups, look at the pictures showing different hobbies. Take turns to recommend a new hobby for each person in your group. Use the ideas given and the phrases in the box.

Student A: You seem very creative and you enjoy expressing yourself, so I recommend joining a drama club. It will help you build confidence and perform on stage.

Student B: That sounds interesting! Since you are fond of strategy and thinking ahead, you should definitely take up chess. It is a fantastic way to train your memory and problem-solving skills.

Student C: I think you would really enjoy table tennis because it is fast and energetic. It is perfect if you want to stay fit and have fun playing matches with friends.

WRITING

A. Discuss.
• Are you a member of a club? If yes, what kind of club is it? Do you like it? If not, would you like to be?
• What kind of information would you want to have about a club before joining?

Yes, I am a member of our school sports club, and I really enjoy taking part in the weekly football training and tournaments. If I were not a member, I would like to join a robotics or chess club.
Before joining a club, I would want to know about the meeting schedule, the exact location, the membership cost, and what equipment or materials are provided.

B. Read the announcement about Greenville Youth Club and the email a student wrote in response. Then answer the questions.
1. How does David address the person he is writing to?

David addresses the person formally as “Dear Ms Collins,”.

2. What information does David give about himself?

He states his full name (David Freeman), his age (15 years old), and the school he attends (Greenville Secondary School).

3. What information does David ask for?

He asks about the membership fee, the facilities and activities offered, the possibility of playing outdoor sports, the opening days and times, and whether there is a weekly schedule.

4. Does he use direct or indirect questions?

He uses indirect questions to ask for information in a polite and semi-formal way.

5. How does David sign off?

He signs off formally using “Yours sincerely,” followed by his full name, David Freeman.

C. Read the information in the box. Then read the direct questions 1-4 and form indirect questions.

D. Read another email another student wrote in response to the announcement in activity B. Divide it into paragraphs, and improve the underlined sections.

My name is Alex Taylor, and I am a 15-year-old student at Greenhill Secondary School. I enjoy team activities and would love to join this event.

However, I would be grateful if you could provide me with some further details. Firstly, I would like to know how much the event costs and what this fee includes. Secondly, could you please let me know whether food and drinks are provided, or if we should bring our own snacks? Finally, I was wondering where exactly we are supposed to meet on the day and at what time.
